History of Woodstock, NY

To most, the town of Woodstock brings to mind the famous music festival to which it gave its name. However, the original festival was planned to take place in the town of Saugerties north of Woodstock, and when this plan fell through, the actual festival was held in the town of Bethel located 90 minutes to the southwest.

Prior to this, Woodstock was already known as a location for the arts, as through the 20th century the area hosted music and arts festivals, including the Maverick Festivals and Woodstock Sound Outs, which provided a venue for many popular folk and rock bands.

Before that, in the early part of the 20th century, Woodstock became a hotspot for the burgeoning Arts and Crafts Movement. In the early 19th century, members of the Hudson River School of painting resided in the area. Going all the way back, European settlement in Woodstock began in 1770, with the town itself being established in 1787.
