Along the ridge that Cragsmoor occupies there are a number of forest preserves and popular natural areas which visitors enjoy as they take New York Route 52 south from Ellenville towards Pine Bush. Overall, the area around Cragsmoor is heavily wooded, with a few winding roads dotted with unassuming homes on spacious lots. 
 
The city of New York is approximately 90 minutes south of Cragsmoor. Cragsmoor falls within Ulster County. The county seat is Kingston, and the area includes towns like Woodstock, Rochester, Ulster, and Hurley. Technically, Cragsmoor is part of the town of Wawarsing, the center of which is located approximately 20 minutes north.
 
Historically, the area of Cragsmoor has been popular with artists for decades, as the community began as an artists colony in the 19th century.

The middle of Cragsmoor has also been designated as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. This is due mainly to the prestigious architects who designed some of the homes.
 
For most forms of commercial entertainment, services, or common conveniences, residents of Cragsmoor have to visit one of the nearby towns like Ellenville. Ellenville itself is a charming town with many historic buildings and a downtown center packed full of cozy coffee shops, brunch spots, stores, and cultural attractions. 
 
The valley north and south of Ellenville has many more attractions and facilities, including golf courses, resorts, regional airports, emergency services, healthcare providers, and large stores.
